Satchy

“The powerful humanized drums are wonderfully blended with the voice to create a beautiful sound of keys, guitar, bass, and sax…I’m even obsessed by the noises on this. I can’t fully explain, but it’s really something… It’s definitely one of the purest album masterpieces I’ve encountered in my entire life so far.”

– Shotaro Jotatsu, Vancouver-based DJ

Satchy, the brainchild of Los Angeles native Satchel Brown, emerged onto the music scene in 2016, crafting jazzy, intricately layered fusion tracks that are beyond categorization. A seasoned musician since his teens, Satchy coined his sonic explorations, “alternative soul” – a flavorful gumbo of genres and sounds.

Rooted by an upbringing immersed in Black culture, Satchy was raised on a diet of jazz legends and soulful melodies, finding creative fuel in the works of Sly & The Family Stone, Patrice Rushen, Gil Scott Heron, A.R. Kane, Roy Ayers and Sun Ra, alongside visual artists like Charles Burnett and Carrie Mae Weems. Rejecting the pristine sheen of modern production, Satchy sought to capture the warmth of vintage vinyl, infusing his tracks with a raw, authentic energy. His journey led him to collaborate with renowned L.A. producer Roger Habon (aka 10.4 ROG), elevating his compositions to new heights.

Amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, Satchy’s introspective lyricism took on a meditative quality, grappling with themes of loss and reflection. Having attended the California Institute of the Arts, his multi-instrumental prowess shines as he plays guitar, bass, piano, and handles vocals – all from the comfort of his home studio in Alhambra.

Beyond the studio, Satchy channels his passion into mentoring aspiring young producers while continuing his quest for musical innovation. Blending disparate genres into a cohesive whole, Satchy’s musical odyssey has earned acclaim for its originality and depth, as noted by Piotr Orlov of Afropunk: “an extended musical walk-about that reflects a wholly original vision.”
