Drawing from her multicultural roots—born to a Syrian mother and Ecuadorian father—Dear Dea blends her deep love of jazz with reggaeton and Latin influences. Focus track “Papi” playfully embraces the reggaeton scene, with Dea noting, “I kind of like that it’s almost cringy, digging into that whole vibe of artists talking about mamis. I wanted to do the same.” Inspired by artists like Rauw Alejandro and Yebba, she leans into the melodrama of the Spanish language, weaving bittersweet memories of a past relationship and the city she left behind.
The EP is a cathartic journey through letting go, acceptance, and finding home. After her artist visa was denied in 2019, Dear Dea was forced to leave New York and return to Finland, where she found herself back in her childhood bedroom for the first time since she was 19. Heartbroken and unable to return to the city she loved, she channeled her turmoil into writing for the first time in years.
Collaborating with producer Kasperi Kallio, Dear Dea crafted a sound that mirrors the EP’s emotional arc, balancing warmth and intimacy. From the stripped-back vulnerability of “Tuesday” to the hopeful piano outro of “Sunflowers,” the EP closes with a sense of triumph and relief. “Sunflowers,” written in her new home, reflects on finding peace after hardship: “It feels like coming home after a long, crazy day,” she shares.
Raised in Helsinki with time spent in Damascus and Quito, Dear Dea’s sound is shaped by her upbringing, blending classical, jazz, and Arabic influences. After moving to New York at 19 to study jazz, she began collaborating with musicians and honing her songwriting. Now back in Helsinki, she continues to write, teach vocals, and piece together her next project.
“Sage” speaks to the reggaeton and Latin music Dea was listening to while writing; the melancholia of the subject set alight with a calypso-soca-inspired bassline and groove.

Clearly infatuated with R&B, the Finnish songwriter isn’t afraid to draw on some unexpected influences when building her sound.
