"Brown Lotus" is a thoughtfully curated journey from start to finish. The album opens with "Balanced," featuring a lively saxophone riff and mellow guitar melody that seamlessly transitions into "Hold You," where Satchy's silky vocals shine over a low-key production. The music is both a nod to the past and a step into a new, original sound, blending influences from soul-jazz, R&B, and alternative rock.
Satchy's musical background is deeply rooted in Black music, influenced by his parents' love of jazz and soul, and later expanded by his experiences with indie and rock music. This diverse musical upbringing is evident in "Brown Lotus," where his guitar style, inspired by legends like Wah Wah Watson and George Benson, emphasizes rhythm and texture. Throughout, Satchy aims to convey authenticity, encouraging listeners to embrace their feelings and find comfort in the music's soothing, soulful vibe.
He and his band clearly grasp the concept that the voice should be a compliment to a track, as opposed to an overbearing shadow that hinders the listener from fully immersing themselves in this genres multidimensional acoustical offerings.
- Good Game Talent
...when guitarist Satchel “Satchy” Brown starts singing in a way that announces a love of classic alternative rock and indie-pop (think Beck or Pavement), the way-back machine breaks down. And as Ben Lindenburg’s saxophone, or Brown and Sean Tarpey’s Gibson guitars, begin to take an extended musical walk-about, what comes into focus is a wholly original vision.
